The Name Is a Real Feature

There is a reason LegalZoom keeps winning first-time buyers, and it is not gullibility. Theirs is the one name in this category most owners have already heard, the support operation behind it is large, and somebody who already keeps trademark filings or estate documents on a LegalZoom account gets something genuinely useful by keeping the agent appointment on the same login. Familiarity reduces the number of decisions a new owner has to make in a week already full of them. That has value, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

$249, Flat, and It Renews Itself

Registered agent service at LegalZoom costs $249 per year. The rate does not step up, does not expire into something worse, and carries no first-year discount that our review located. Structurally that is clean, and clean deserves credit in a market full of teaser pricing.

What $249 does not purchase is a different legal outcome. Colorado writes the role plainly in Colo. Rev. Stat. § 7-90-701: the agent keeps a physical address inside the state, stays reachable there, consents to the appointment, and takes delivery of process and Secretary of State correspondence on the company's behalf. That description does not improve when the invoice grows. The $150 separating $249 from $99 buys nothing in the statute.

Seven hundred and fifty dollars over five years. In Colorado money that is fifteen LLC formations at the state's $50 filing fee, spent on the difference between two mailing addresses.

The automatic part of the renewal does quiet work inside that total. A charge nobody re-approves each year continues by default rather than by decision, and five consecutive defaults are how a gap you would have argued about becomes a figure you never saw arrive.

Why Colorado Owners Cannot Simply Do This Themselves

The obvious way around a $249 invoice is to name yourself, or a cousin who lives in Denver, and skip the vendor entirely. Colorado narrowed that door on July 1, 2025. An individual serving as registered agent must now hold a Colorado driver's license or state ID, or otherwise verify residency with the Secretary of State, which turns a casual favour into a paperwork commitment and rules out the out-of-state relative altogether. A company registered here and in good standing clears the bar without any of that, which is one reason the professional option keeps its appeal even for owners who would happily have done it themselves. The $99 Position

Ninety-nine dollars for year one, and the same ninety-nine for every year that follows, printed on the pricing page before you spend anything. A summons delivered to our Colorado desk is scanned the same day it arrives and sent to you, with a copy filed permanently in your portal. The agent line of your public record shows our staffed Colorado street address rather than your own. Periodic report alerts are inside the fee rather than sold as a compliance tier. What you submit is a Statement of Change Changing the Registered Agent Information, authorised by section 7-90-702 of the Colorado Revised Statutes. No form number attaches to it, because this state accepts nothing on paper: every business filing runs through the Secretary of State's electronic system, and the $10 charge appears on the official fee schedule. Open your entity record, begin the statement, type the incoming agent's name and Colorado street address into the agent section, pay, and file. Acceptance is the moment the change takes effect, and that generally happens in the same sitting.

Two sequencing points matter more than the paperwork does. First, you are asked to affirm that the new agent agreed to serve, so the successor has to be engaged before you begin rather than after; done that way the role transfers cleanly and your company is never listed without an agent for even a day. Second, close the LegalZoom account only once the state's business database displays the new name, and do it well ahead of the renewal date, because their charge follows a schedule that owes nothing to your filing.
