The Free Year Is Easy to Price. The Next One Is Not.

Take the Free Year Seriously

Add registered agent service to an Inc Authority formation order and twelve months of it cost nothing. We went looking for the usual counterweight, a setup charge, a shortened term, a penalty for cancelling early, and came away without one. If cash is tight in the first year of a Colorado company, a year of a service the state legally requires, at no charge, is a genuine advantage. This page does not dispute that and would look silly trying.

Look for the Second Year and It Is Not There

Now try to find what year two costs. We read the help pages, the package listings, and the front page, and no figure appears in any of them. The terms do not carry it either. The pattern that fits is a price quoted at checkout or over the phone, which is to say once the free year has finished doing its persuading.

Two consequences follow. Neither needs us to guess at the amount.

Agent service is a subscription, not a purchase. Colorado attaches the requirement to the entity for its whole life, so the renewal is not a footnote to the deal. The renewal is the deal. A price that describes only the first twelve months describes almost none of what you will spend.

Information arrives when leverage has moved. At the moment of ordering a formation package you are as committed as you will ever be and as uninformed as you will ever be. A year later, when the figure finally lands, a year of filings, addresses, and correspondence sits on the vendor's side of the relationship, and leaving has acquired friction that did not exist at the start. Nothing about that is unlawful or even rare. It does mean the ordering of events suits the seller, and a buyer who spots it can neutralise it with one question asked before checkout instead of after.

We are not going to invent the number. Guessing at a rival's price would demolish the only thing this page argues, which is that a published price treats a buyer better than a withheld one. The comparison works fine with that cell blank.

Colorado Manages to Print Its Own Numbers

Worth noticing that the state itself sets a higher bar here than one of its vendors. Every charge the Secretary of State levies is published on one page: fifty dollars to organise an LLC, ten to change your agent, twenty-five for the periodic report, fifty as a penalty when the report goes late. None of it is quoted on application. A founder can budget a Colorado company down to the dollar before spending anything, because a government agency decided that publishing its rates was the ordinary way to behave.

That is the standard the comparison on this page is measured against, and it is not a demanding one.

The mechanism is a Statement of Change, keyed into the Secretary of State's business portal; no numbered paper form exists, since Colorado takes no paper for business filings at all. Because the statement affirms that your incoming agent consented to the role, line up the replacement first and file second, which keeps the appointment continuously occupied instead of briefly vacant.
